Vineyard Haven Sunrise

The morning I took this photo, I felt like I had stepped into the pages of a storybook I didn’t want to close. For me, Vineyard Haven Sunrise is  a whispered promise. The harbor was still, the sky soft with the kind of light that seems to have its own pulse. That little boat tied to the dock looked like it too had paused to honor the moment. The schooner’s masts cut a clean silhouette through the apricot sky, and the world—just for a breath—felt entirely at peace. But that morning wasn’t simple. I was temporarily moving off Martha’s Vineyard.  As I stood there, holding my camera like a lifeline, I felt the sun say don’t forget this. Don’t forget the quiet magic. Don’t forget what it means to belong to a place that knows you.

That sunrise felt like the island’s way of sending me off gently—with love, with light, and with a reminder. Vineyard Haven was reminding me it would wait. I’ve watched many sunrises here, but this one held a deeper ache. The way the dock shadows leaned into the water, the slow curve of warmth across the sky—it all felt like a memory being made in real time. I think places like this can love us back. And in that moment, I knew I wasn’t leaving for good. The island had marked me too deeply, and its beauty—sharp, quiet, timeless—was asking me to return. And I will within a year's time.

Before the Harbor Forgets My Name

The harbor holds its breath—a
a hush before the ferry bell,
sunrise smears honey on the water
like a goodbye you didn't want to give.

Gulls drift without urgency,
wooden posts lean like tired sentries,
and the house on the dock
watches me leave like an old friend.

The sky opens
like a secret I forgot I knew,
light pours over my skin
as if to keep me warm for the road.

I take everything with me
even the color of that morning—
amber, coral, the deep blue of promise,
folded quietly into my chest.

The island doesn’t chase—
it waits, it breathes, it remembers.
It sends you off soft as sea-glass,
but holds your story in its sand.

Even now, I carry the hush—
that first light, that stillness.
Wherever I go, I walk
with the harbor in my soul.

I’ll be back—
before the boats forget my name,
before the tide learns to rise
without me watching.
