Windy Denim Grace

In Windy Denim Grace, I sought to capture the profound essence of resilience, heritage, and the sacred strength of an Afro-Indigenous woman standing near the ancient cliffs of Aquinnah. Rooted in this sacred place, her gaze stretches beyond the horizon, uniting the ancestral whispers carried on the wind with the infinite reach of the ocean before her. Clad in denim, a symbol of endurance and adaptability, and adorned with wampum that carries both history and testimony, she embodies the bridge between past and present. The sea and sky embrace her as part of a living continuum, reminding us that she is not only grounded in tradition but also a vital voice for the present.

Yet her concern extends far beyond Aquinnah. She stands as witness and advocate for struggles unfolding across the nation: families in Texas resisting the seizure of their ancestral lands for border walls; Apache people defending Oak Flat from mining that threatens to desecrate their sacred ground; and communities across the West engaged in battles over who stewards the land and for whom. In her stance lies a call for humane and nondiscriminatory policies, a demand that dignity never be negotiable, and a vision for a healthier world where all people can live in balance with land, body, and spirit. Windy Denim Grace is not only a portrait, but a declaration — that survival, justice, and grace endure, and must continue to guide our collective future.

Windy Denim Grace

The wind gathers her story,
braiding whispers into strands of hair,
each thread carrying the echo of prayers
and the defiance of those who would not vanish.

She stands where sea meets sky,
on the sacred bluffs of Aquinnah,
denim stitched with resistance,
eyes steady on horizons not yet free,
her breath woven with salt and uprising.

The ocean calls her by name,
its depths a mirror of her ancestors’ strength,
its waves chanting: No pipelines, no stolen land,
forever returning, forever unbroken.

Wampum gleams against her skin,
not as ornament but testimony,
a ledger of broken treaties and survival,
a covenant carved from shell and struggle.

From Aquinnah her gaze reaches outward:
families in Texas guard their fences
as walls carve through ancestral soil;
Apache prayers rise over Oak Flat,
where copper dreams would hollow sacred ground;
and across the West, the battle burns—
who stewards the land, who profits, who protects—
as policy weighs futures
on the scales of power and survival.

Her stance declares a future
where policies honor every life,
where justice is not selective,
where dignity is not negotiable.

She carries within her stride
the promise of a healthy world,
where bodies are nourished,
where spirits breathe without fear.

And here, by the Aquinnah’s cliffs,
where red clay meets the endless sea,
she rises as both root and wing,
her voice braided with ocean light,
her presence a signal fire across the nation:
a living manifesto of resilience,
a grace no empire can erase.
