The artwork "Seaside Sistah’s" captures a moment where two women bask in the warmth of the Labor Day rising sun at Inkwell beach, on Martha's Vineyard. Their bond of sisterhood shining even more brightly than the dawn itself. This piece invites us into their world, reflecting the nurturing glow of their relationship and celebrating the deep sense of solidarity they share. Set against the tranquil backdrop of Inkwell Beach, it encapsulates a serene interplay of connection, urging viewers to delve into the themes of identity, belonging, and the indomitable strength of sisterhood.
In the late 19th century, Inkwell Beach in Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard, blossomed into a cherished oasis for African Americans in search of both leisure and community. This welcoming stretch of sand became a magnet for families drawn together by their love for coastal enjoyment and the joyful rhythms of the sea. By the late 1890s, Inkwell Beach had transformed into a vibrant haven for Black vacationers, a stark contrast to the exclusionary barriers other beaches enforced across the island and the nation.
Amid the laughter that danced on the breeze and the soothing symphony of waves lapping at the shore, a rich cultural tapestry began to weave itself—filled with stories that painted the lives of those who gathered there. Conversations flowed like the tides, sharing personal updates about cherished family members, discussing recent happenings in the Black community, planning joyous family reunions, reminiscing about childhood memories etched in sand, celebrating professional milestones, and reveling in local entertainment events, all flavored with the aromas of beloved foods. Inkwell Beach was not just a destination; it was and still is a vibrant community—a place where history, joy, and connection thrived in harmony.
