Turtle Island Song
Her eyes hold dawn and memory,
where cedar smoke meets ocean’s hymn—
a gaze that gathers ancient winds
and scatters them across the skin,
inviting us to feel again.
Her clay-red hair, like bluffs that weep,
falls into moss and forest streams;
each strand a root, a sacred braid
of cliff and sky and island dreams,
where sea meets soil and hearts are made.
The turtle glides through painted time,
its shell a map of stars and songs—
a quiet strength that bears the world,
a keeper of what still belongs
to those who walk the earth with care.
The deer, on twilight’s breathless hill,
pauses between the dusk and dawn—
its silence speaks of listening,
of balance kept when all seems gone,
of grace that knows where we belong.
She is the song the land still sings—
in waters deep, in trees that bend.
She is the fire, the root, the rain,
the voice that time cannot suspend.
She is beginning. She won’t end.
"Turtle Island Song" is a vibrant, spiritual portrait of an Indigenous woman whose face radiates with ethereal calm and ancestral memory. Her large, expressive eyes seem to carry centuries of stories, while her clay-red hair—echoing the Aquinnah Cliffs of Martha’s Vineyard—flows into lush greens and ocean blues, symbolizing deep kinship with the land. Around her, elements of sacred life emerge: a deer standing still in quiet reverence, and a turtle swimming below, grounding the piece in the origin story of Turtle Island, the Indigenous name for North America. These symbols honor a worldview rooted in balance, respect, and the enduring relationship between people and Earth.
The painting’s palette of fiery oranges, turquoise, and earthy browns evokes a dreamlike realm where land, water, and spirit intermingle. Each brushstroke becomes part of a visual prayer—reminding us that the land remembers, the ancestors speak, and Indigenous voices still rise to protect what is sacred. Turtle Island Song is both a celebration and a call to listen more deeply to the wisdom that has never left.
