The Velocity Of Her

The Velocity of Her
The sea has a way
of keeping its secrets
in motion.
A wave rises
and carries the colors
of everything it has touched—
blue bruised into violet,
turquoise lit from within,
small fires of coral
burning along its spine.
She enters that turbulence
with her arms extended,
and suddenly
the water has a body.
Her body has a tide.
Behind her,
the wave gathers itself
into a cathedral of white,
its vaulted spray
caught beneath the sun.
She is already moving
through the center of it—
where force becomes grace,
where gravity loosens
its grip on the flesh.
Look closely:
the ocean is writing
in broken sentences.
Foam.
Light.
Salt.
A shoulder turning.
A hand opening.
Nothing stays long enough
to be named.
Perhaps this is velocity—
not speed,
but the distance
between one self
and the self
that appears
when the body finally
trusts its momentum.
She leans into the blue
and the blue rearranges itself.
She lifts an arm
and the wind changes grammar.
She turns
and the entire surface
seems to follow.
Far behind her,
the sun hangs low
inside a field of apricot and lavender,
watching the sea
spend itself beautifully.
And she—
she is the briefest thing
in the painting,
yet everything is moving
because she is there.
The wave.
The light.
The white explosion of water.
The long, unbroken pull
toward somewhere
the eye cannot see.
She does not cross the sea.
She alters its direction.
That is the velocity of her.
