Before her name was spoken in a boutique doorway,
before paintings rested against her island walls,
the Vineyard knew her by the rhythm of its tides.
Salt wind moved through generations of Wampanoag and African American kin,
and the sea kept their stories in its blue hands.
She was raised where gulls write white arcs across the morning,
where cedar, sand, and shell remember every season.
The water taught her patience in winter,
abundance in summer,
and how to stand steady
when the horizon keeps changing.
Now she carries beauty in another form—
cloth that catches light,
gifts chosen with care,
and paintings that travel from my hands into hers,
like small boats finding a trusted harbor.
In her, the island is not a destination.
It is inheritance.
It is the echo of footsteps on ancient paths,
the memory of fires near the shore,
the enduring presence
of those who came before.
So this portrait is more than a woman beside the sea.
It is a lineage standing in the light.
The waves rise around her

but to recognize their own—
