I framed the sunset landscape directly within her profile to mirror the way the Aquinnah Cliffs of Martha's Vineyard rise above the ocean. For me, these coastlines represent spaces where the physical and spiritual worlds meet. I envisioned the crow as a quiet guardian looking back over her shoulder, watching over the shoreline as a reminder that these ancient lands endure within the people who protect them.
I drew inspiration from local indigenous traditions, where crows and ravens are respected as intelligent messengers and symbols of ancient wisdom, change, and creation. Rather than treating the bird as a dark omen, I placed it intentionally between the intense light of the sun and the calm waters of the Vineyard, serving as a knowing witness to the history and memory embedded in the coast.

and the ancient clay remembers.
