There’s something undeniably humbling about standing in a place where nature has been left to be itself—untamed, untrimmed, and gloriously alive. I took this photograph at Long Point Wildlife Refuge in West Tisbury during the stillness of winter, when the sky stretches wide and the sun glows low over the salt marshes and Atlantic edge. The wind-sculpted shrub in the foreground—bending but not breaking—felt like a living metaphor for resilience. The grasses were golden and brittle, the clouds soft like watercolor washes. I was the only human there, and for that moment, the world felt clean and whole.
Wild refuges like Long Point are sacred spaces. In a time when so much of our land is paved, posted, or privatized, places like this remind us that we’re not separate from nature—we’re held by it. These landscapes offer more than scenic beauty; they shelter migratory birds, fragile ecosystems, and our own restless spirits. We need them for balance, for perspective, for breath. I left with wind in my hair and grateful for the quiet generosity of wild land left to thrive.
