I took this photograph on Surf Drive Beach in Falmouth, Massachusetts, using a panoramic lens so I could capture more than what the eye usually sees. There’s something about expanding the frame that feels like expanding the soul—stretching just far enough to hold complexity, stillness, and movement all at once. In this image, you see the gentle curve of the shoreline cradling the water like an embrace, and you might notice the footsteps leading toward the tide. They’re mine. I walked quietly, feeling the sand beneath me, thinking about how each step forward in life—no matter how small—is sacred. The sea didn’t rush me. It just shimmered and waited.
This wide view represents how I try to live: always asking, what else is happening here? What might I be missing if I only look straight ahead or focus too narrowly? Life, like this moment, is more than one direction, more than one story or version of the truth. In Falmouth that day, I wasn’t seeking escape. I was seeking understanding. This image is my reminder to keep paying attention—not only to what’s in front of me, but to what surrounds it, what shaped it, and what it might become if I walk slowly enough to notice.

Each footfall leaves a hollow
that fills slowly with light or water
depending on the hour.
I walk as if time has a pulse
and I am listening for it.
The horizon is not a line—
it is a quiet invitation
to keep becoming
even when I feel undone
by what I carry.
There is no need to rush sorrow
or joy.
Both know the tide
and how to return
without needing permission.
I do not ask the sea for answers,
only patience.
Only the kind of silence
that holds
without vanishing.
Here, in the widened frame,
I remember—
I am still part of the picture
even when I feel
like a shadow on the edge.
