New Years Day Spirit: Aquinnah

On the first day of the year, standing on the sands of Aquinnah, I witnessed a moment that felt divinely choreographed just for me. After years away — years of study, of growth, of stretching my spirit across unfamiliar landscapes — I had finally returned home to Martha’s Vineyard. Degrees in social justice, journalism now lived quietly inside me. The sun, dipping low behind the rocks, stretched golden rays across the water, reaching out as if to gather me back into the embrace of everything I loved and had missed. I titled this photograph "New Year's Day Spirit" because that is exactly what I felt: the unspoken language of gratitude, renewal, and deep belonging.

There was something transcendent about the way the light poured itself so freely over the stones and foam, like an ancient benediction whispered into the bones of the earth. It was as if the Island itself had paused to celebrate not just the turning of a calendar page, but the sacred rhythm of return, resilience, and homecoming. That evening became a threshold moment, an offering I accepted with an open heart — to live each new day with reverence, to honor the knowledge I had earned, and to never lose sight of the simple, holy beauty that first called me home.

Belonging to Destiny

The sun touched the stone with a crown of light,
and the sea moved in, steady and sure,
as if the whole Island breathed a welcome,
and the new year placed a hand on my heart.

I stood on the sand, not searching, but home,
carrying every hard-earned mile within me,
my degrees, my dreams, my deep belief
that it is never too late to become who you are.

The waves spoke in a voice I knew by heart—
a voice older than memory,
you have returned, they said, stronger,
with the wisdom you wanted to find.

I bowed to the horizon,
to the rocks, to the light,
to the years it took to build this life,
and felt myself part of the Island again —
belonging to everything that lasts.
