It Was A Beautiful Morning To Witness: Town Beach, Oak Bluffs

For six decades, Town Beach in Oak Bluffs has held me in its tide—through childhood laughter, teenage daydreams, shared blankets with friends, long walks with family, and quiet moments of solitude. This photograph, taken at dawn, feels like a living memory: the lavender blue sky fading into a horizon ablaze with orange and yellow, the ocean calm yet alive with color, the beach and dry grasses standing sentinel beside the slow hush of waves. I’ve stood in this very light before—at seven, then seventeen, and now at sixty-seven—watching sunsets carry away one day and offer the promise of another.
There is something eternal in this view, though everything else keeps changing. The houses nestled behind the grasses, the shape of the shore, even my own reflection on the water's surface—they all whisper of time passing. But the feeling this place gives me—that mix of reverence, comfort, and quiet awe—has never faded. The sea here doesn’t just meet the sky; it meets my memories, layer after layer. This photograph doesn’t just show a sunset; it holds a lifetime.
The Shore That Raised Me
Since I was seven, this shore has known me—
barefoot and breathless, chasing tides,
the sun painting freckles on my face,
salt clinging to joy,
the ocean humming a lullaby of forever.
Now at sixty-seven, I still return,
watching the lavender bleed into flame,
each sunset a quiet benediction,
a soft reminder
that grace can rise without a sound.
Dry grasses lean in the golden hush,
whispering stories to the wind—
of laughter buried in sand,
of picnics, tears, and small miracles
folded neatly into summer’s sleeve.
Alone or surrounded, the beach stays
a kind of steady—
homes perched like afterthoughts
while the sea opens its arms
and remembers everything I’ve ever felt.
In the photograph, dawn blooms again—
a slow dance of color and calm.
This isn’t just a view.
It’s a life wrapped in sky and sea,
and I am always arriving.
