Falmouth Blues

When I took this photograph, I wasn’t chasing sadness or the romantic ache so often stapled to anything with the word “blue” in it. I was chasing something cleaner, something closer to the real spell the ocean casts at dawn. The sky and the sea weren’t just echoing each other — they were involved in some ancient conversation that morning, whispering in gradients of indigo and gold. I stood there, camera in hand, not as a photographer trying to "capture" a moment, but as a witness, grateful that the moment allowed itself to be seen. Some colors you don't own, you just bow to.
In Falmouth Blues, it was the rightness of the scene that took my breath away — the effortless, wordless agreement between water and sky. No drama, no spectacle, just a humble, exquisite clarity. The way the shallow tide peeled itself over the sand seemed like a quiet vow. It made me think that maybe all beauty doesn’t need to shout or suffer to matter. Sometimes it just is. And sometimes, if you're lucky, you get to walk inside it for a little while before the world demands you leave.
Falmouth Blues
The morning rose out of silence,
draped in currents of water and sky,
a boundaryless hymn unfolding,
where even the sun forgot to rise loud—
and the world was better for it.
Here, blue did not mean sorrow;
it meant continuation, vow, breath—
the long held note between heartbeats
when everything tender is still
and the ocean writes it down.
A single ripple wore the dawn's hush,
tiny and sure as a whispered "stay."
It curled over the hem of the beach,
an old soul teaching younger ones
how to step lightly on the earth.
No flags of longing were raised here,
only the soft astonishment of being,
of color nesting inside color,
of a loneliness that knew itself
as the first form of love.
I walked back with my hands empty,
but my bones carried the blue—
not as ache, not as hunger,
but as something finally understood:
some songs sing you home.
