Falmouth Blues

I took this photo just after sunrise at Surf Drive Beach in Falmouth, Massachusetts. I call it Falmouth Blues, not because there’s sorrow in the scene, but because the color itself is a kind of joy—unfiltered, expansive, and alive. The way the ocean reflects the sky in shimmering layers of cobalt, aquamarine, and glass-gray makes it impossible to tell where water ends and heaven begins. Some believe that water remembers—our footsteps in the sand, our whispered hopes carried by tide—and this morning felt like the sea was whispering back. A love song in the key of blue.

There’s something essential about being near water, something that brings more peace to my life. Maybe it’s the rhythm, the way the waves offer a metronome for the spirit. Or maybe it’s memory—how the sea feels like a conversation I’ve been having my whole life. On this morning, I wasn’t searching for anything. But I found more peace, reflection, and a kind of infinite embrace. The blues of Falmouth didn’t break my heart. They opened it.

Saltwork

The tide has no clock
but it pulls me anyway—
toward the saltwork of being whole,
where barnacled truths cling
to every broken shell I once was.

Here, sea-glass glints like old ache
polished kind by time,
and the gulls do not apologize
for their hunger—
why should I?

I walk the line between foam and forgetting,
each wave a ceremony
to rinse the ghost of what I clung to.
The ocean never keeps
what isn’t willing to dissolve.

Some nights the moon feels like kin,
a quiet witness in tidal prayer.
I give her my silence.
She gives me back
a language shaped like light.

I kneel at the lip of the world,
not to pray, but to listen.
Every ripple says: You are not alone.
Even the moon touches us,
though she is always leaving.

And in the end, it’s this—
not survival, but salt-slick grace.
To be worn smooth,
to be held by water
and returned to the shore, singing.
