Enigmatic Allure

My intention is for Enigmatic Allure to be more than just a painting—it is a declaration of selfhood, a visual testament to the layered complexity of my existence. I resumed painting five years ago, while earning a bachelor’s degree in social justice and journalism and a masters degree in social work. Although I stopped painting and drawing at twelve, it found me at just the right time—when I was ready to explore my identity in ways words alone could never fully express. The colors, the textures, and the gaze in this portrait reflect years of not publicly sharing my insights and a new empowerment found in creativity. It took decades before I understood the full spectrum of myself. Receiving my Asperger’s diagnosis in 2012, this was a revelation that finally made sense after a lifetime of feeling slightly different, and of navigating a world that often felt too indifferent, and too unnecessarily complex.
As an African American and Native American, the world saw me through its limiting lens. The barriers of discrimination were constant, whether in education, employment, or being heard. Despite the discriminating forces against me, I persevered and cultivated a life I admire. My Asperger’s, with all its unique ways of processing the world, became a beneficial artistic asset. It allowed me to see details and to obsess over color and form in a way that brings depth to my work. My neurodivergence is a strength, guiding my hands and heart toward an expressive freedom I now cherish.
I have been silent for too long, but my artwork marks the beginning of my unfiltered expression. Through my art, I am reclaiming my narrative—one brushstroke and verse at a time. This self-portrait is not just about me; it is about anyone who has ever felt unseen, unheard, or underestimated. It is a challenge to the world’s expectations and a celebration of sharing one's voice. I am no longer silent. I am here, creating and sharing my perspective in a way that I hope will inspire others to do the same. The world tried and still tries to define me, but I will never let it define my authentic story.
