There’s something about standing at the edge of the day that never gets old. I took this photograph just as the sun was rising over Falmouth Heights Beach, and the light hadn’t fully committed yet—hovering between hush and blaze. The ocean was restless, its surface trembling under a sky that seemed undecided. But in that in-between moment, something opened. The houses leaned into the morning like quiet witnesses, the rocks held their line, and the water, endlessly arriving, offered no final word. I didn’t need one.
I’ve always felt that dawn is the most honest hour—the hour when nothing performs. There’s no rush to impress, no reason to rush at all. It’s a conversation between the elements and the unseen: clouds tracing light, waves holding rhythm, color drifting into color. As I stood there, lens raised but heart unguarded, I realized that this image wasn’t about capturing anything. It was about being still enough to be changed.
Falmouth Hours
The sky didn’t break
it rearranged—
a hush of lavender bruising
into gold,
waves touching stone like breath.
Houses leaned
as if to hear
what the wind almost said
before changing its mind,
windows full of silence.
I stood
with salt on my lips,
watching light make decisions
it never had to explain
to anyone.
The sea, unbothered
by memory or forecast,
kept folding itself forward
as if distance
was a form of faith.
Nothing asked me
to believe in it.
And so I did.
