Come Sail Away: Eastville Beach, Oak Bluffs

I took this photograph during a summer ferry ride to Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard—a journey that never fails to fill me with joy. As the ferry pulled closer to the island, I looked out and saw this elegant sailboat gliding across the sparkling water near Eastville Beach. The sun was high, the breeze was gentle, and the moment felt suspended in time. I titled this image Come Sail Away because it captures the freedom, lightness, and wonder that always accompany me on this route. It’s more than a beautiful view—it’s a return to myself.

Martha’s Vineyard has been my soul’s second home since 1965, a place where my family and I came for refuge and celebration. Though I now live in Falmouth, I plan to return to the island soon, to live among its tides and skies once more. Riding the ferry never feels routine—it feels sacred. Every wave, every glint of sun on water, is a whisper of welcome. In this photograph, you can feel that invitation—a call to let go, to breathe deeply, to dream again.

I hope Come Sail Away brings the same sense of serenity and hope into your space. When you look at it, may you be reminded of the importance of slowing down, honoring the places that shape us, and trusting that we’re always allowed to come home. This piece is a love letter to the Vineyard, to blue horizons, and to the enduring beauty of a simple summer day.

Poem: Come Sail Away

The ferry hums a lullaby
as I lean into the wind,
my heart already ashore
before my feet ever touch
the island’s sacred sand.

Eastville glistens under summer’s hand,
boats swaying like daydreams
anchored in the deep.
A sail slips forward, effortless—
like a wish cast upon the sea.

I have known this place
in every chapter of my life—
as a child chasing tidepools,
a woman seeking quiet answers,
a soul returning to joy.

The water does not ask
why I come back—
it simply opens,
wide and steady,
and welcomes me again.

On Martha’s Vineyard,
I remember how to breathe,
how to sit still with beauty,
how to let my spirit drift
without losing my way.

So come sail away with me,
where the light is kind
and time forgives itself.
Here, love is written in salt,
and every crossing is a prayer.
