A Sailors Dream: Photographed on the Steamship Ferry Going to Martha's Vineyard

I stood on the Steamship Authority ferry, eyes fixed on the boat slicing a clean white line through blue. The wind was bold and bright, pushing the scent of salt and open skies into my lungs like a blessing. Somewhere beyond the frame, a soft voice of memory whispered, but this moment was now. And now tasted like freedom.

The ocean has always known how to speak to me without words. I watched the boat in the distance as if it were carrying the very idea of possibility. Each churn of water, each trail of froth, reminded me how movement is its own kind of prayer. Here, on this stretch between mainland and island, the ordinary transforms: sea into sanctuary, ferry into vessel of becoming, horizon into promise. It’s not just a ride—it’s a rite.

As we neared the Vineyard, I let the rhythm of the water rock away every thought that didn’t belong. I wasn’t escaping—I was arriving. To a place where the Atlantic greets you like kin, where boats speak in wakes, and the sky carries your secrets like sails. I didn’t need to know the boat’s name out there. It was enough to see it moving, free and full of direction. That’s what a sailor dreams of: not just the sea, but being wholly part of it.

The Shape of Blue

The sea doesn’t ask for permission
when it sketches joy across your ribs.
It simply opens, vast and unafraid,
offering its endless yes
to anyone bold enough to listen.

A boat cuts through morning
like a thought too bright to hold,
white wake unraveling behind it—
a signature in motion,
the body in love with direction.

Here, even the clouds remember
what it means to wander well—
to stretch and drift without apology,
to kiss the tide lightly
then move on without regret.

The wheel hums a secret rhythm
known only to those who steer
not by compass, but by longing—
that ache to reach the invisible place
your spirit already lives.

This is not escape, but return—
not the chase, but the embrace.
To know your name in salt and wind
is to know the truth of flight
without ever leaving the sea.
