A Pier Perspective: Town Beach, Oak Bluffs

There’s something quietly commanding about standing on a pier in the off-season—especially this one in Oak Bluffs, just beside the Steamship Authority terminal. In summer, this walkway echoes with laughter and the wild splashes of children daring each other to jump off the bridge into the sparkling water. But when I took this photograph, the air was winter-sharp, and the only sounds were the hush of waves and the wind whispering secrets through the slats. I was struck by the sheer stillness—how the long lines of the wooden planks and railings stretched endlessly into the horizon like a lesson in patience, perspective, and presence.
Winter strips things bare. It reveals what’s beneath the summer gloss—the bones of things, the quiet truths. As I stood there with my camera, I felt both solitude and clarity. Life, like the seasons, moves in cycles: playful, loud, warm, then hushed, stark, cold. Each has its own kind of beauty and its own necessary teachings. This image, to me, isn’t just a scenic view—it’s a metaphor for walking forward even when things feel empty, trusting that the path leads somewhere meaningful, even when the end is not yet visible.
Poem: “A Pier Perspective”
the boardwalk stretches
like a question unanswered
its silence louder
than the laughter it remembers
in summer, the air sings
with cannonball courage and barefoot joy
but now, the cold holds the rails
like memory holds the heart
we do not always leap—
some seasons teach us to stand still
to see what the water reflects
when no one’s stirring its face
each time of year
writes its own scripture
and winter’s gospel
is presence without performance
