Christmas Day at the Inkwell Beach carries its own kind of magic—gentle, quiet, and full of light. This bench, adorned with a wreath of holly and pine, seemed to welcome the sunrise like a guest of honor. I stood there for a while, letting the golden rays stream through the slats, the ocean calm and glimmering behind it. There was no crowd, no noise, no gifts wrapped in shiny paper—just the gift of presence, of being held by this place that has seen so many stories, so many souls. On that winter morning, the world felt simple and whole.
There is something timeless about Martha’s Vineyard, and especially the Inkwell. Even in winter, even on Christmas, it holds a kind of warm hospitality that lives in the air, in the ocean breeze, in the way the sun breaks through with no fanfare. This photograph reminds me that joy doesn’t always come in loud bursts—it often comes in stillness, in beauty that asks nothing of us except that we notice. And on that day, I did. I noticed. I breathed in the moment, and it gave me more than any wrapped present ever could.
The Hymns of Christmas Light
the sun slipped gently
through the wooden bench slats
like it knew exactly
how to gift light
without needing ribbon
or applause
a wreath waited patiently
green with memory, red with cheer
as if the bench itself
had dressed for the occasion
welcoming the ocean's hush
and heaven’s golden breath
no carols played
but the tide hummed a hymn
no fire crackled
but warmth pulsed
in every corner of sky
and salt
even the sand seemed holy
each grain a bell
ringing softly
for all who paused
to look and listen
on this blessed December day
the sea wore winter’s lace
not to dazzle
but to soothe
to remind us that beauty
never leaves
it just changes season
and here, on this sacred shore
the morning bowed
in reverence
to love made visible
by light,
by time, by being
