Schooner Day Trip

There’s nothing quite like catching the wind aboard a schooner in Vineyard Haven Harbor. I snapped this photo just as we were easing away from the dock, sails still furled but hearts wide open. The sky was a painter’s dream—pure cobalt with cotton clouds drifting lazily—and the water shimmered like glass catching sunlight. From the moment we stepped aboard, the spirit of adventure stirred. With each creak of the ropes and call of the gulls, I felt the old-world romance of sea travel wrap itself around the day like a salt-kissed shawl.

For anyone who loves schooners, this is the trip to take. There's something magical about feeling the rise and fall of the boat beneath you, the breeze lifting your hair, and watching the shoreline shrink as you slip into a slower rhythm. Time stretches. You begin to notice the shape of each wave, the play of shadow on deck, the quiet joy of being part of a moving, floating story. Whether you're sailing solo or with good company, the schooner transforms an ordinary afternoon into an unforgettable escape. Vineyard Haven gives you that rare blend of history, charm, and sea-bound freedom—and trust me, once you've done it, you'll crave it every summer.

Poem: Salt Wind Keeps Secrets

Beneath blue blaze and canvas sky,
we left the shore with laughter light—
a schooner cutting ribbons clean
through waters bright with island sight.

The deck hummed soft beneath our feet,
a rhythm older than the land;
the ropes sang songs of other sails,
and salt lived deep in every hand.

We passed the piers, the towns grew small,
just ripples held the voices near—
and gulls gave chase to memory
that vanished clear and reappeared.

No map could hold the joy we felt—
just sea and sky, the wind, the crew;
and every mile away we went,
the more we knew what freedom knew
