Moshup Cliffs

I stood still in the golden hush of late afternoon, my lens lifted to the painted bluffs of Aquinnah—Moshup Cliffs, where the earth tells stories in layers of red, ochre, and white. Each hue speaks of ages past, shaped by time, tide, and the elemental breath of the Wampanoag ancestors who have lived in harmony with this sacred land for over ten thousand years. This photograph felt like an offering. I didn’t just capture the cliffs; I felt them. Their grandeur reached into something timeless inside me, as if nature herself paused to admire her own reflection.
This place belongs to the legend of Moshup, the benevolent giant who strode these very shores, dragging whales from the sea and stamping the cliffs into color with his mighty feet. It is said he chose this corner of the world for its peace, and I believe him. Children played in the distance, laughter carried by the breeze, and the ocean curled softly around the boulders, polished smooth by centuries of devotion. To witness Moshup Cliffs is to be invited into a living myth—a moment where geology, spirit, and joy converge in one eternal, sun-drenched breath.
Poem: Moshup’s Gift
Beneath the cliffs where giants tread,
The earth wears robes of fire and thread,
Each layer brushed by ocean’s hand,
A masterpiece of sea and land—
A place no time can ever shed.
The winds hum songs the ancients knew,
While grasses nod beneath the blue,
And I, a local with humbled gaze,
Stand still within the sun’s warm blaze—
A Native passing through the view.
The boulders rest like whales at peace,
Their edges worn, their weight released,
The tide recites a gentle prayer,
A rhythm only love could share—
A lullaby that will not cease.
Here Moshup walked, or so they say,
His footprints carved in crimson clay,
He taught the people how to live,
To fish, to dance, to build, to give—
To hold the sacred in each day.
And as I take this moment in,
The cliffs, the sea, the sky, my skin—
I know this frame, this breath, this light,
Is not just mine, but shared in flight—
A gift of grace I hold within.
