Anchor Reflections: Menemsha Dock

There’s a kind of magic that happens in Menemsha during the quiet lull of January. I took this photograph, Anchor Reflections, just as the last light dipped below the horizon, casting golden rays across the water like whispers of summer promises. The boats rested gently against the dock, their reflections flickering like candle flames on the tide. A crescent moon hovered in the fading sky, and for a moment, everything stood still—the sea, the sky, the breath of the island. I remember how the chill in the air felt crisp but not unfriendly, as if the Vineyard herself was holding space for something sacred and still.
What I love most about this image is how it reminds me that beauty isn’t reserved for the crowd or the season. Even in the so-called off months, when the island has exhaled many of the last of its tourists and returned to its natural rhythm, there’s an effortless poetry here. The boats—anchored, aglow, quietly dreaming—seem to speak their own language of peace and purpose. I didn’t plan the shot; I simply stood at the edge of the dock, let the moment wash over me, and clicked the shutter. It’s a love letter to stillness, to light, and to the quiet conversations between the ocean and the sky.
