"The Possible Far" is a poetic narrative and painting that delves into the experiences of immigrant families, tracing their paths from South America to the United States. At the core of the story is a mother who embodies the bridge between prophecies of her elders and the tangible dreams of a safer, more prosperous life in a new land. The poem illuminates the themes of hope, resilience, and transformation, weaving together the imagery of the harsh realities faced by immigrants with their unwavering optimism. The title, "The Possible Far," suggests both the daunting distance traveled and the possibilities that lie ahead—a reflection of the quest for a promising horizon.

Central to the narrative is a mother whose journey is influenced by the wisdom passed down from preceding generations. Her decision to leave her homeland is driven by the prophecies of her elders, who foresaw a safer and more fulfilling future in America. This decision encapsulates the universal quest for security and a brighter tomorrow for one's children.

In its entirety, "The Possible Far" seeks to evoke empathy and understanding in viewers, inviting them into the intimate world of a family whose journey is marked by both hardship and hope. Through a mix-media painting/poetic expression, the story emphasizes the universal longing for safety, potential, and the realization of dreams in an unfamiliar world.

The Possible Far by ©Ocean Eversley

The Southern grind

of little food, polluted water,

and a dead-end life her children inherit

drives her to reflect on the clear-eyed promises

of her elders.

Charting visions of new beginnings

they walk west,

following the sun climbing over arid mountains

and the trails of compass-cactus

that direct like constellations.

Midday, a mother implores stumbling little bodies

to go on past corpses and rosaries that are partly buried by the sand.

She blows wishes over the rainless clouds and aching sun

and chants sacred prayers for things

worthy of being in a poem of joy.

At midnight, they turn North, crossing the Rio Grande,

where children must defeat the rough waters that swallow children whole.

When she hears their teeth clenching,

she reminds them of the home their father secured a few miles a way.

Wings wrapped in dust, in myths,

and in a futile escape, they

face the clamor of steel gates

and indifferent guards who stop their courageous steps from moving East

to where crayons won’t be thrown away.

Facing South,

she stares between bars

and asks: Is the possible far

from this world void of sky.

A mother with a mind filled with prophecy

whispers to children

to close their eyes and remember

the language shaped by love and flowers,

and gentle winds blowing dreams over borders.
