She Dreamed in Waterlight by Ocean Eversley
Her hair is forest and waterfall,
green with memory,
alive with blossoms
opening into light.
Petals gather
resting in a moment
that stretches
just beyond time.
With closed eyes
she enters the current within—
where breath slows,
where something ancient
moves without effort.
A woman shaped from depth,
she carries light in her spine,
flowing,
endless,
sure of its path.
Water moves through her,
falling into stillness,
returning as radiance.
She exits rooted in bloom,
held in the soft gravity
of her own becoming,
and everywhere she is,
something opens.
When I began this painting, I didn’t know exactly where it would take me—I only knew I needed to follow the feeling. The image emerged slowly, intuitively, like memory rising through layers of light and water. I used acrylics and oils to build a soft, luminous world: a BIPOC woman with eyes closed in quiet power, her face serene, her hair expanding into a sacred landscape of forest and falling water, threaded with blossoms that seem to bloom from breath itself. She is part presence, part memory, part mirror. This is not just a portrait—it is a portal.
As I painted, I thought of the women I come from—women who carry entire histories in their bodies and still create space for beauty. I thought of my mother, of all BIPOC women who have been asked to hold more than their share, yet remain rooted in something unbreakable. The hair that rises from her is not just hair—it is living terrain, a quiet unfolding of earth and spirit. Her closed eyes hold a kind of vision that does not need to look outward. The more I layered color, the more she revealed herself—not as a single figure, but as an origin, a prayer, a place of return.
This painting became a meditation on wholeness—on the way we hold both stillness and movement, depth and bloom, memory and becoming. I painted her with the hope that others might feel something open within themselves—a recognition, a softening, a return. She exists somewhere between worlds, where water falls endlessly and flowers continue to emerge. I know she is alive. I know she is me. I know she is us.
