Since all human ancestry begins with a Black woman, it is fitting that the original mermaid should also be envisioned as Black. She is not an invention of fantasy alone but a reflection of origin, a daughter of the deep whose very presence challenges the erasures of history. Here, myth becomes liberation. The coral cradles her, the horizon embraces her, and the sea itself seems to honor her journey. This painting is both a love song to water and an affirmation that representation, in all its beauty, matters.

Before the world could name the sea,
she rose from salt, from womb, from flame,
her body carried eternity,
and every current bore her name.
She is the root of breath and bone,
the first to dream, the first to sing,
from her, all waters learned their tone,
from her, the tide found offering.
Her skin, the map of where we start,
her song, the thread of time unspooled,
her gaze, a mirror of the heart,
her presence, myth remade, re-ruled.
O daughter, mother, origin’s keep,
the ocean bows, the stars align,
the world remembers in the deep
that all beginnings are also divine.
