Double Consciousness
She stands between worlds—face forward,
half woman, half wing,
rooted in fire and indigo,
with an eye that has learned
to see beyond the veil.
The eagle whispers of distances,
of silence stitched in the sky—
her gaze pierces through noise,
through histories unspoken,
carving vision out of shadow.
Once, the world tried to split her—
to make her forget
she is both storm and sun,
both captive and captain,
a duality reborn as flame.
Now she moves like knowing—
all clarity and myth,
a map in her marrow,
guiding those still earthbound
toward their own ascension.
Let her be your compass—
the one who rose,
not despite the fracture
but because of it—
anointed by the eye of flight.
Double Consciousness: Vision Beyond the Visible
Within shamanic traditions, the eagle is seen as a sacred messenger, offering the gift of heightened vision and perspective. Its presence invites us to transcend the noise of daily life and witness the broader patterns of existence—both seen and unseen.
W.E.B. Du Bois once spoke of a "double consciousness," the lived experience of African Americans who must navigate the world through dual lenses: as both African and American. This duality, while often born of struggle, can also be a profound source of power—offering a textured, multidimensional way of seeing, knowing, and being in the world.
In my painting Double Consciousness, I bring these two traditions into conversation. A Black woman gazes forward, her face merging with the image of an eagle. This is not a mask but an embodiment—a fusion of ancestral clarity and intuitive flight. The eagle’s eye does not replace her own; it deepens it.
She becomes a symbol of elevated awareness, able to rise above distraction and distortion. Her clarity is not just personal—it is visionary. It’s a call to others to find their truth, to awaken their strength, and to soar beyond limitation. In her, we witness the power of double consciousness transformed—not as burden, but as beacon. She leads not only with sight, but with insight.
In a world that often tries to split us, Double Consciousness is a reminder: our wholeness is not in choosing one self over another, but in daring to be both—brilliantly, beautifully, and without apology.
