The Breath Between Worlds
When I painted The Breath Between Worlds, I was reaching for something ancient and future-bound at the same time—something that lives in the core of memory but has never been spoken aloud. This woman—suspended underwater yet radiant with purpose—embodies that liminal space where silence becomes song. Her adornments are not just decoration; they are technologies of lineage, encoded with story, resistance, and revival. The water is her mother and her mirror. I imagined her not drowning, not struggling, but choosing to submerge herself in the deep in order to remember who she was before forgetting.
Creating this piece required me to confront my own submerged self—my own silences, my own shapeshifting. Painting her was like painting a truth I didn’t yet fully know, but recognized with my whole body. She carries light not just in her spine but in the tension between her inhale and the next movement forward. That breath, held underwater, is sacred. It is the breath our ancestors held before crossing oceans, before giving birth, before dying. It is the breath that knows endurance and becomes transformation. She is not a myth. She is a memory.
What the Current Cannot Translate
I was not born of water,
but I remember its dialect—
a pulse older than names.
The surface lies,
pretending it separates sky from truth and spirit.
Below, I speak without a tongue.
This is not swimming.
It is a negotiation
between gravity and grief.
My chest bears constellations unlearned,
my thighs, seismic archives.
We are not separate—we are part ocean,
Salt-blooded, tide-born,
memory suspended in cellular hush.
Heaven is not above but within pressure.
Light fractures
into ancestral algorithms—
color becomes a form of resistance.
The sea does not forgive.
It teaches.
And its lessons arrive breathless.
If you think this is beauty,
you have not yet drowned
in the story I am telling.
