The Day the Sky Kept Giving

Some days simply refuse to end.

After spending a joyful afternoon and evening in Oak Bluffs—photographing the harbor, enjoying the music at Nomans, and soaking in the island's unmistakable summer spirit—I boarded the 8:45 Island Queen ferry back to Cape Cod. As we crossed Vineyard Sound, I noticed an incredible band of pinks, purples, and soft greens stretching across the northern horizon. I smiled, thinking, "What a spectacular sunset." It never occurred to me that I wasn't looking at the fading day at all—I was looking at the Northern Lights.

Once I arrived home, I settled in, uploaded photographs from my day on Martha's Vineyard, and began sharing them on Facebook. Then I started seeing posts from people across Cape Cod: The Northern Lights are out! Suddenly, that colorful horizon from the ferry made perfect sense.

Even though I was tired, there was no way I was staying inside. I grabbed my camera and headed to the beach, where the aurora had grown even more brilliant. Waves rolled gently onto the shore while ribbons of emerald, magenta, and violet danced across the night sky. It felt surreal that such a breathtaking display was unfolding over Cape Cod.

Sometimes life rewards us twice in one day. First, without realizing it, I witnessed the aurora from the ferry. Then, hours later, I stood on the beach watching it perform its magic overhead. It was nature's gentle reminder that even when we think the day is over, the sky may still have one more masterpiece waiting for us.
