Summer Bliss at Featherstone Center for the Arts: A Martha's Vineyard Homecoming

Sunlight glittered off Vineyard Sound the afternoon my painting Summer Bliss was selected for the Embrace MV exhibit at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs, marking the first time my work has been exhibited on Martha’s Vineyard. I am truly honored to participate in this exhibit.

This moment holds deep personal significance—not only because of the island’s beauty and history, but also because Featherstone is a beloved cultural center that nurtures creativity and connection. Summer Bliss is a visual meditation on peace, joy, and rootedness. It features a Black woman immersed in oceanic light, eyes closed in radiant surrender, echoing the serenity many of us find by the sea.

The word INKWELL appears prominently in the painting, a tribute to the historic beach in Oak Bluffs that has long served as a sanctuary for African American vacationers. The Inkwell is more than just a stretch of shoreline—it is a living symbol of Black joy, resilience, and community. I created this work to celebrate that legacy, to honor the women who carry the sun in their spirit and the ocean in their memory.

Showing this work at Featherstone, with its commitment to local artists and community, made the moment even more meaningful. I carry deep gratitude for the opportunity—and for all the ancestors, waves, and women who have carried me here.

Prints are available with or without Inkwell text.
