A Conversation About Art, Place, and the Stories We Carry
There is something special about being invited to talk about the work you have spent years creating quietly, one painting at a time. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Falmouth Community Television to talk about my solo exhibition, Echoes of the Coast: Stories of Place, Presence, and the Female Gaze, now on view at The Gallery at FCTV.
In the interview, I share more than the story behind the exhibition. I talk about the places that continually find their way into my work—Falmouth, Martha’s Vineyard, the ocean, the shoreline, and the people whose presence has shaped the way I see. My paintings exist at the intersection of the literal landscape and the emotional landscape: the places I have walked, photographed, loved, and returned to, and the inner experiences those places awaken.
I also talk about the women who inhabit my paintings. Their faces, bodies, gestures, and surroundings are part of a larger conversation about identity, beauty, strength, vulnerability, self-possession, and belonging. I am interested in creating women who have an interior life—women who are fully present within their own stories and invite the viewer to look more deeply.
For me, Echoes of the Coast is ultimately about connection. The ocean is a recurring presence in my work because water has always given me a language for movement, transformation, freedom, and possibility. My paintings bring that relationship between water, light, landscape, and human experience onto the canvas, while my photography and poetry extend the conversation in different directions.
I am grateful to FCTV for giving me the opportunity to speak about the ideas behind this body of work and to share a little of the person behind the paintings. Sometimes an exhibition allows people to see the artwork; a conversation allows them to see the artist.
I invite you to watch the interview, then come experience Echoes of the Coast in person at The Gallery at FCTV, where the paintings can be encountered together as one evolving story of place, presence, identity, and the many ways we learn to see.
